MD2 Pineapple- the premium

 I planted these pineapples for almost two years, now starting to bear fruit.  This variety of pineapple is called MD2. MD2 pineapple is the premium pineapple in Sarawak and the demand is very high here because of its sweetness.

 I  planted some of these pineapples from a seedling propagated by tissue culture takes approximately two years to bear fruit however planting using suckers only takes 14 months to bear fruit.

 The MD2 Pineapple was introduced by Pineapple Research Institute(PRI) in Hawaii in 1961 when PRI was dissolved in 1975, all developed hybrid seedlings were subsequently evaluated at Maui Pineapple Company. The introduction of MD2 to Malaysia started in 2008 when the Malaysian Pineapple Industry Board (MPIB) bought 100,000 suckers from the Philippines. Pineapple Technology Development Division (BPTN), a division of the Malaysian Pineapple Industry Board (MPIB), was put in charge of planting the pioneer  batch before releasing the cultivar for industrial planting.

 MD2 is the sweetest among other regular varieties of pineapple. The MD2 Pineapples grow to a uniform size, ripen evenly and has a longer shelf life than other varieties of pineapple. It has high brix  (14 and more) and low acidity of 0.4 to 0.45%.
